Sky Johns
VOLUNTEER
Sky is a second-year medical student with a BA in Sociology and a passion for health equity and helping women build confidence through movement. Originally from Idaho, she was introduced to weightlifting by her dad as a way to cross-train for high school cross-country. She quickly discovered that she enjoyed lifting much more than long runs. In college, she joined her school’s powerlifting club and tried CrossFit, experiences that deepened her confidence and love of the gym. Today, lifting is one of her favorite ways to de-stress after exams and have something to look forward to during the demands of medical school. Her favorite lift is the squat, although nothing beats a good arm day.
Sky’s commitment to health equity grew through her undergraduate work with nonprofit organizations supporting access to healthy lifestyles for immigrant, refugee, and food-insecure communities. These experiences gave her a deeper understanding of how social and economic barriers can affect health and shaped her perspective as a future physician.
The Strength Initiative brings together two of Sky’s greatest passions: strength training and making healthy living more accessible. She is grateful to be part of an organization that removes barriers and creates a welcoming space where all women can experience the physical and mental benefits of getting stronger.
Outside of school and the gym, Sky loves to bake (especially when chocolate is involved), hike, paddleboard, and play card games with her husband. She is also an avid reader and somehow manages to get through about two books a week.
